A haven of understanding
Teesh Dowie believes every child has a gift, and it’s her role to help uncover it. “Once you engage with them and find their little diamond,” she says, “they shine.”
When Teesh and her husband first took Europe into their care, he was just six months old and had experienced a traumatic start to life.
“He found it hard to attach to people,” remembers Teesh. “It was a lot. But he had a quiet determination and was very observant. Patience and consistency allowed those strengths to come forward. When a child finally feels secure and can trust, that’s when you start to see who they truly are, not their survival behaviours.”
Today, Europe is an ambitious 19-year-old who has completed plumbing and building apprenticeships, loves sports and is working as a landscaper.
“I’m really, really lucky to have Teesh as a mom,” says Europe. “She’s always here for me to support me and to listen, whatever the situation.”
