National Care Standards

The estimated completion time for each National Care Standards course is 2 hours, however you can save your progress as you go, working through small sections whenever convenient for you.

Please refer to the course descriptions below for further information and to register.

Note: The National Care Standards apply to caregivers caring through Oranga Tamariki or another agency. They are not relevant for caregivers who receive the Unsupported Child Benefit (UCB). 

NATIONAL CARE STANDARDS

Part 1: Needs assessments, plans and visits to, and collection of information about, children & young persons.

This course explores Part 1 of the National Care Standards – “Needs assessments and plans for tamariki”. We take an in-depth look at the processes involved in supporting children in care.

The course emphasises the importance of assessments, planning and making the best use of resources available to you.

You’ll learn more about the timing of assessments and plans, the frequency of social worker visits and why maintaining cultural connections for tamariki is so crucial.

NATIONAL CARE STANDARDS

Part 2: Support to address a child’s or young person’s needs.

Our training on Part 2 of the National Care Standards highlights the critical role caregivers play in supporting the well-being, development, and education of children and young people in care.

It covers the importance of fostering whānau connections, cultural identity, and safe caregiving practices, while maintaining mana tamaiti. You will also learn how to address each child’s unique needs through assessments and specialised services.

NATIONAL CARE STANDARDS

Part 3: Assessment, Plans, and Support for Caregivers.

This course will help you understand the support you are entitled to as a caregiver.

Part Three of the National Care Standards is called “Assessment, Plans and Support for Caregivers.” It sets out the assessment and support plan you should receive to help you meet the needs of the children in your care.

We cover the processes Oranga Tamariki needs to carry out before they can approve someone as a caregiver. The course also takes a close look at what you can expect a support plan to include.

NATIONAL CARE STANDARDS

Parts 4, 5 and 6: Feedback, Transitions and Monitoring.

This course is about Parts 4, 5 and 6, and will equip caregivers with essential knowledge to support children and young people effectively. It emphasises understanding rights, care transitions, and compliance with regulations.

Part 4: Supporting children and young people to express their views and contribute to their care experience.

Part 5: Supporting children and young people during care transitions.

Part 6: Monitoring and reporting on compliance with these regulation.
