October 2025 Caregiver News: Upper North Region

Kia ora koutou,

I hope you are all keeping the end of winter viruses away. There seems to be a lot going around at the moment. As the first blossoms of spring appear, and with the clocks going forward, making for lighter evenings, I am looking forward to more time for walks on the beach with my whānau.

I hope you enjoyed the Māori learning that we shared through our Facebook and Insta pages during Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). If you missed it check out or National Facebook page here – Facebook

I attended the Social Services Providers Whakamanawa Conference in Rotorua to promote Caring Families Aotearoa. I was also excited to hear from numerous speakers in our sector and it was lovely to connect with a range of people committed to supporting tamariki and their families at the conference.

I also enjoyed time with some of our caregiver members and their tamariki at MOTAT on Saturday 13th September. We were lucky to be given 30 passes through their Hōtaka Uru Hapori Community Access Programme for some of our caregiver members and their tamariki to attend and enjoy a day there, and what fun we had. I know everyone enjoyed exploring the various exhibitions, riding the tram, and the aviation hall was a highlight for many. We have asked to be considered for more passes through this programme and if successful we will advertise on our social media and in a mail out.

Training

As you may be aware, all our training is now self-directed and online. Keep an eye out for updates as we will continue to roll out new courses every month.

Our next self -directed online course for release in October is ‘Developmental and Historical Trauma.’

Developmental trauma arises from ongoing childhood experiences like abuse or neglect, disrupting healthy growth and leading to lasting emotional and psychological challenges. Historical trauma is the collective emotional and psychological damage experienced by a group over generations due to significant historical events like colonisation, slavery, war or genocide.

In this course you’ll learn to recognise trauma’s signs, its effects on the brain, relationships, and emotional regulation, and explore strategies to build safe, supportive environments.
